Material Dossier -- 2026

Piñatex® (producer in administration)

The trademark holder has been in administration since August 2025, so treat any offer as remnant inventory and confirm who is actually selling. The widely quoted 80% is a fibre-to-PLA ratio inside the base fabric, not the bio-based content of the finished coated sheet.

Material Category: Pineapple-leaf fibre

Composition by Mass

Declared Material Matrix

Pineapple leaf fibre (PALF, agricultural by-product)

Piñatex Original grade, supplier-stated public specification (Ananas Anam product spec: 72% PALF / 18% PLA / 5% Bio PU / 5% PU). Not independently verified by Material Primer.

Plant-Based

PLA (corn-derived bioplastic)

Piñatex Original grade, supplier-stated public specification. The Piñafelt® base is 80% PALF / 20% PLA and forms 90% of Original. Not independently verified by Material Primer.

Plant-Based

Bio-based PU coating

Piñatex Original grade, supplier-stated public specification. Coating totals 10% of the finished material for Original/Mineral. Not independently verified by Material Primer.

Blend

Petroleum-based PU coating

Piñatex Original grade, supplier-stated public specification. ⚠️ Grade-dependent: on Piñatex Performance the coating is 42% of total composition and the bio-based base only 58% — confirm which grade your quotation covers. Not independently verified by Material Primer.

Bags, footwear uppers and accessories where a visible fibrous texture is intended.

Not Suitable For

Not for smooth or fully coated finishes. Not for high-tension structural components.

Known Limits

Documented Constraints & Untested Conditions

One of the highest published plant contents in the sheet-alternative category. The resin coating still governs wet performance and abrasion, and it is the layer the specification describes least. The leaf fibre is a genuine agricultural by-product — a feedstock argument, which is not the same as a durability argument.

The USDA Certified Biobased Product label in this producer’s portfolio belongs to Anam PALF, the raw pineapple leaf fibre (the producer states 99% biobased) — not to the finished Piñatex sheet. The USDA BioPreferred catalogue lists Anam PALF® (Ananas Anam UK Ltd.) and returns no Piñatex entry. A fibre certificate does not carry to the coated material: ask for a certificate that names the coated product.

On the widely quoted “80%”. That figure is the supplier’s fibre-to-PLA ratio inside the Piñafelt® base fabric — “made from 80% waste pineapple leaf fibre and 20% PLA” — not the bio-based content of the finished coated sheet. Both constituents of that base are plant-derived, so the base itself is close to fully bio-derived; 80% is a ratio within a sub-assembly, not a bio-content figure. The supplier’s own technical data sheets give the finished sheet as 72% PALF / 18% PLA / 5% bio PU / 5% PU (Original and Mineral), 72 / 18 / 10% PU (Metallic), and 46% PALF / 12% PLA / 42% PU (Performance). The bio-derived share therefore depends entirely on grade — roughly 90% for Original against roughly 58% for Performance. Both are floors rather than exact point values, because part of each PU coating is itself bio-based PU in a proportion the supplier does not disclose. No ASTM D6866 result is published for any grade, so treat all of these as compositional shares by mass, not as a measured biobased-carbon content.

Supply status. Ananas Anam UK Limited (company number 08368141), which holds the Piñatex® trademark, has been in administration since 19 August 2025; the appointment of administrators was filed at Companies House on 4 September 2025, and the registry still shows the company as In Administration following the administrator’s progress report of 17 March 2026. The company’s own sampling store is offline. Material may still be offered from stock or through successor arrangements; treat any offer as remnant inventory and confirm the selling entity and its right to supply before designing Piñatex® into a programme.

No independent test record on file. Material Primer has not bench-tested this product. The figures above are the supplier’s own published specification. Treat them as a starting point for your own testing, not as verified performance.

Verification Boundary -- What This Page Does Not Claim

This dossier compiles the supplier's published specification, the stated scope of certificates held, and referenced standards. It does not represent independent laboratory testing, production batch monitoring, or transaction data. Suitability judgements derive from the documents above, not from bench tests.
